I was lucky to have seen him once about 12-13 years in Colorado Springs at this bar downtown called Manhattan's.

Told him that I missed Jerry... His response.. "So do I, everyday."

Merl is a missing spot in my music-collection..!

WHERE can I find some Merl shows to fill the gap.. Where?

Gotta love "Blues from the Rainforest."

Hey--it may not be good form to respond twice to a RIP thread, BUT had to say, when I think of Merle, I think of Keystone, Berkeley...those that didn't have the chance don't know what they missed...it's the essence of the "small venue" that so many of you love, and those that never saw a "big name in a small place" hope for...

In the 70s it was THE place to see folks in the Bay Area. He and Jerry were there regularly, as were so many of our other favorites (one example, Bobby and the Midnights had their FINEST hour there in 79).

Miss that place as well as this man...

As soon as I heard of the loss of Merl I went and put on the "Live at Keystone" discs. Merl Saunders influence on Jerry Garcia, especially his helping him recover from the coma, makes him one of the legendary figures in Grateful Dead history. We'll miss you Merl, thank you ever so much.

If there's such a thing as ass kicking in heaven, perhaps he'll give Jerry his due. RIP Merl.

RIP “Godfather of Jam Bands.”

In the Fall of 1986, after his coma, Jerry turned to Merl to get his chops back. That, I believe, speaks for itself.

This has been a tough week, first Hal Kant and now Merl.

Yes sad day indeed. Merle brought out some of the best solo Jerry ever, I hope he realized how much we appreciated that.

Goodbye Merle.
